AMF Fibracoustic specified for infants school Fibracoustic, a lightweight woodwool ceiling tile from AMF Ceilings, has been installed in a new-build infants school, designed by architects Gale & Snowden to an ecologically friendly specifi cation. The unusual two-storey building features fi rst fl oor ceilings that follow the rafter line from ridge to wall plate, only broken by room dividing walls. The complex design required an adaptable ceiling tile that met BB93, Document E acoustic regulations for school buildings.
Ian Snowden from Gale & Snowden Architects explains, "The concept was to maximise the use of natural daylight throughout the building, which includes 8 classrooms, various offi ces, medical room, toilets and shower rooms and sports hall, reducing the need for electricity. We employed the University of Exeter as our acoustic consultant to help us specify a ceiling product that met the attenuation and reverberation levels required by the building regulations. We are extremely pleased with the fi nished result. In places the ceilings are very low and close to eye-level, but the natural wood texture and close fi t of the Fibracoustic tile looks very good."
Rob Moyse from RJM Projects was the specialist contractor who installed the system. Rob says, "This was a complex installation that required very accurate cutting of tiles to fit into the timber glu-lam beams. The tile abutted directly to the perimeter without a trim detail and therefore required raking and compound cuts prior to screwing directly onto counter batons. Fibracoustic is a quality product with excellent acoustic and fire resistant properties. It is also available on a 24mm exposed T grid system, making for an easier and quicker installation. This system also helps to maintain the integrity and look of the tiles as they are easily removed and less likely to be damaged by over enthusiastic maintenance staff when accessing the ceiling void." |
